Situational Judgement Tests (SJT) assesses judgment required for solving problems in work-related situations typically aligned to a specific role or job family. SJTs are used primarily as a way to sift multiple applications for a role and to provide a realistic job preview for prospective candidates. They are particularly helpful in attracting the best talent and are often used for graduate trainee programmes where they provide an opportunity for the organisation to ‘show case’ their offering whilst simultaneously identifying candidates with the closest job fit.

An SJT presents candidates with hypothetical and challenging situations that employees might encounter at work which may involve working with others as part of a team, interacting with others, and dealing with workplace problems. In response to each situation, candidates are presented with several possible actions in a multiple choice format. Most commonly, candidates are asked to select the most effective response to the situation described. However, some tests may require candidates to list the responses in order of effectiveness.

Unlike most psychological tests, we strongly recommend that SJTs are not bought 'off-the-shelf', but are in fact designed specifically to suit individual job role requirements and the culture and practices of your organisation.

Thus we start by conducting a job analysis; reviewing Job Descriptions, observing performance in the workplace and conducting interviews. We typically design each test to consist of between 25 and 35 ‘items’ or short descriptions of problem situations. Each description is usually followed by one, two or three questions and multiple possible responses which candidates are asked to rate.

We can present the SJTs in either a static form or a multi-media format which help organisations attract and select the best possible talent.
