An Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a structured process which enables an individual to create an individual plan to realise their development objectives. IDP’s are specific to the individual and tailored to employees’ job function and department and align to the organisation’s vision, mission and values. IDP’s focus on enhancing an individual’s skills to ensure effectiveness within their current job role and assist in developing the skills required for future roles. The key towards the success of an IDP is that the employee has ownership of the IDP, and receives support from their manager in implementing the plan. IDP’s can be created following a different diagnostic process. For instance, they can follow on from a Development Centre, a performance conversation, a psychometric tools process or 360° feedback. The creation of an IDP is a long-term investment and a cornerstone of any talent management process which motivates staff and conveys a clear organisational message that development is a priority.
